      This session will give you a broad overview of the different equipment and instruments needed for dental treatment.

      Assignments and Activities

      You are expected to go to the  dental clinic of the teaching hospital and identify the different dental equipment and instruments.  During week two of your rotation, you will be given a quiz on the same, and the marks obtained will contribute to your final grade.

      This  lecture will aid your understanding of the anatomy of the oral cavity and the facial region

      1.  Understand the normal anatomy of the oral cavity and the facial region

      Assignments and Activities

      You will be required to pair up and carry out an extra-oral and intra-oral examination of each other to identify the different anatomical structures of the orofacial region. This will be marked and will form part of your continuous assessment

      Topic Introduction

      This lecture will help you to conceptualise dental caries as a disease

      2. Describe the aetiology of dental caries 
      3. Outline the management  of  dental caries

      You will be expected to completely evaluate a patient with dental caries and present a written report on the same. The marks awarded will form part of your continuous assessment 

       

    • TOPIC - <Periodontal diseases >

      Topic Introduction

      Medicine meets Dentistry in the periodontium. Having sound knowledge of periodontal diseases is important for multidisciplinary management of systemic diseases with periodontal manifestation.

      Upon completion of this unit you will be able to:

      1. Define periodontal diseases
      2. Classify periodontal diseases 
      3.  Understand the aetiology, clinical manifestation and management of key periodontal diseases associated with systemic diseases.

      You will be required to do a comprehensive periodontal examination of a patient  in the clinic and provide a written report. The marks awarded for the report will go into your continuous assessment.

      This topic discusses the pathology related to the arrangement of teeth and jaws

      Tumours and cysts of the jaw are common, and sometimes a manifestation of  systemic problems. It is important for medical student to be familiar with this common pathologies to enhance holistic patient care

      • To examine, evaluate and diagnose a patient presenting with jaw tumours and cysts

      Topic Introduction

      Odontogenic infections are orofacial infections that arise from dental hard or soft tissues and spread through the fascial planes to affect the general health of an individual.

      1. Define odontogenic and non-odontogenic infections 
      2. Describe the progression of odontogenic infections 
      3. Explain the anatomical boundaries of the primary and secondary fascial spaces of the face 
      4. Describe the clinical manifestations of different fascial space infections 
      5. Enumerate the complications associated with fascial space infections
